A Concerned Waitress & Conversation Tip

Two weeks ago we treated our friends to an evening of juicy BBQ at a local restaurant. We had a great conversation as I used tips from the Conversation Success System

As I swallowed the last bite of BBQ beef, I decided to reward our waitress, Debbie, in a special way.

I waved her over and said, "When you get a chance, could you send the manager over?"

Concern flashed across her eyes.

"Sure thing she said."

Two minutes later the heavy set manager with a mustache sauntered over.

He had that look of "O brother what will these people complain about."

I glanced at his name tag and said, "Steve, thanks for coming over. Wanted to let you know that we enjoyed the dinner, Debbie (waitress) did a fantastic job, and we plan to be back."

He paused and a shocked look momently swept his face.

"Thank you sir! I will let Debbie know."

After some more small talk, he left much happier than when he came.

Look for ways that you can express appreciation, even behind their backs.

Three results happened because I used this tip:

#1: Pleasantly surprised both the waitress and manager…since almost no one does what I said.

#2: Spread some joy to both

#3: Manger gave me a free bottle of BBQ sauce (was not expecting it, but a nice bonus.

A Powerful Conversation Question

Good Conversation QuestionsJust out of high school, I was involved in face-to-face sales. I quickly discovered a selling secret. Make conversation with the potential customer.

Same is true for making friends, leaving a great impression, or having an enjoyable date. (By the way even if you are married or in a committed relationship, going on dates is vital to a healthy relationship)

As I’ve covered in the Conversation Success System, using interest with questions is powerful.

There is one question I would use almost every time with a new customer.

Not sure where I heard it from, but it I love using it and customers enjoyed answering it.

How do you like to spend most of your time?

Most of the time people would share about their work and/or hobbies. Great fodder for more questions or to find a connection.

This is a better question than asking “What do you do?” A person may be embarrassed to mention they are unemployed, etc.

Stick with powerful question above and you’ll take your conversation skills to the next level.

 

Look & Sound Smart, Confident and Powerful in Two Seconds

1263259_button[1]“Two Whopper Burgers and large fries”, I commanded the drive-thru speaker.

Five minutes later I am navigating through traffic munching on fries and my wife is savoring the Whopper.

“How are the fries?” my pretty wife asked.

“Barely edible! They did not salt them!”

If the chef (I use the term loosely) had taken two seconds to salt the fries, it would have made a tasty vegetable (again used loosely) and a happy customer.

This applies to conversation skills.

A two second technique will make you look smart and sound smart. You’ll appear confident and charismatic.

97% of people do not apply this, but the few who do gain respect.

I call it the listening pause.

Pause for two seconds after the other person finishes talking.

You can even mentally count “1 and 2”.

Simple, yet powerful

Applying the listening pause can have five benefits:

1. You stop interrupting others (which is ranks up their with stealing food from another person’s plate).

2. You appear wise and smart.

3. You have time to formulate a reply

4. You will be considered great at conversation

5. You be the 3% who stand out from the crowd.

You may be thinking, “With some people, I’ll never get a word in!”

True.

Apply a variation. Jump in during a pause and say something like, “Here is a thought…”

Pause for two seconds. You’ll still grab their attention. Try it and let me know how it works.
